STEVIE'S COMMENTS FROM HIS FIRST KNOXVILLE RACE NIGHT
Stevie has dropped us another line about his first Knoxville race of the season. (apologies for the delay with this report, I've been snowed under - Stevie got this report to me two days ago - Cliff)
Hi Everyone,
The race weekend started on Saturday afternoon when the drivers did an autograph session, which was a lot of fun.
I signed in and drew number 19, which was my car number last year at Knoxville. 19 determined my grid for the heat race.
I was in the second heat, inside second row.
The air was quite cold, which was good for the cars power, but not so good for trying to warm the car up.
We went out for hot laps and managed to get 5 laps in.
The car felt very good. I was running a new head and neck restraint system during the warmup and had it done up a bit too tight. It took me a while to get used to it.
Our heat race finally started at about 9pm! The race was scheduled for 7 laps. I was meant to start on 3, but the driver in grid 1 didnt take his grid, so I moved up.
At the start I shot into the first turn, it was quite slick. The race didn't last long before we needed to restart however. Someone had jumped the start.
On the second start, I knew I had to get higher up the track. So I got the jump and ran high and came out of turn 2 in the lead. I knew I had to go hard, otherwise cars will just come flying past me - this is Knoxville after all.
I managed to win my first Knoxville race of the season!
The officials were weighing us, the car was legal (phew!). So we were off to the A-Main!
My grid was 8. On the first corner, I jumped the cush and nearly hit the wall, but then got it back under control and went into 3, 3 wide.
Someone spun, I turned to the top of the track, but had nowhere to go. I turned it around to avoid hitting the spun car. The race was red flagged.
When we were back in the work area (pits), the officials said it was to be restarted again.
We got pushed off again and I drove to my grid. Unfortunately for me, I was told to get to the back.
So we started the feature at the back. The track was slick, so we had to run high. I finished 16th. The race finished at 1am!
My next race is on Wednesday at Burlington Speedway, racing with the Sprint Invaders.
I'll let you know how I go.
