1998/99 season age 15:
At Western Springs;
- Two race wins, one 3rd place, one 5th place
- Lead the biggest single sprint car race of the season at Western Springs(The South Pacific Classic) for an amazing 23 of the 30 laps. (This in only eight starts where Stevie was grided up in the field).
At Napier;
- There were 2 heat races with drivers drawing marbles for the 1st race & reverse grid for the 2nd race. Stevie drew grid 2 out of 8 in the 1st heat & finished 2nd. In the 2nd heat from grid 7 he came through to 3rd, which meant he was 1st equal on points for the feature. After picking grid 2, Stevie started well. The track was extremely rough though and with a few laps to go a torsion bar arm broke. As a result of this the rear suspension collapsed. At that stage Stevie was running 2nd and pulling away from 3rd place. Next year maybe!
Shane Walsh (Stevie's Father) recalls,
- "The first meeting that we competed at, held on December 26th Boxing night was very encouraging, in the feature that night ,which we were rapt to get a start in, he did not get lapped throughout 20 laps of racing. Stevie made steady progress through the season starting from the rear of the field until the last three meetings of the season when he was grided up. The South Pacific Classic that he lead for 23 laps contained in the field the current NZ champion plus NZ2, NZ3 & the 3rd member of the NZ sprint car team as well as 2 Australians with 1 being the Australian champion 2 years ago. At one stage in the race until a yellow flag came out Stevie was nearly lapping the 2 Australians! That was certainly a highlight for us.
Throughout the year we raced at Meremere, Ferndene & Napier for experience. We went really well at Napier and had fun at Meremere & Ferndene as they were bigger tracks which gave us the opportunity to gain more experience with different styles of track."
1999/2000 season age 16:
